Parties Involved
| Party Title | Description |
|---|---|
| Judge | A person invested with judicial power. May sit alone or with a jury and is addressed as "Your Honour". |
| Associate Judge | A person invested with limited judicial powers within the Civil jurisdiction of the Court, who adjudicates interim matters in court cases. Will sit alone and is addressed as "Your Honour". |
| Associate | An Officer of the Court. Sits in front of the Judge or Associate Judge and assists in the administration of the Court. Any documents produced under subpoena should be given to the Associate. |
| Tipstaff | An Officer of the Court. Sits next to the Associate and in front of the Judge. He or she is responsible for keeping order in the Court and will usually swear in or affirm the witness. |
| Plaintiff | The person who brings a civil proceeding. |
| Defendant | The person against whom a civil proceeding is brought. |
| Crown | The prosecutor in a criminal matter. |
| Accused | The defendant in a criminal matter. |
| Plaintiff's barrister (civil)/prosecutor (criminal) |
A lawyer employed by the plaintiff to represent him or her in Court, or by the Crown in a criminal matter. The barrister will usually wear robes and a wig and will face the Judge. |
| Plaintiff's solicitor(civil)/ Solicitor for the Crown (criminal) |
A lawyer employed by the plaintiff, or by the Crown in a criminal matter, who prepares the papers for the barrister and who sits at the Bar table opposite the barrister in Court. |
| Defendant's Barrister (civil)/ Barrister for accused (criminal) |
A lawyer employed by the defendant to represent him or her in Court, or by the accused in a criminal matter. The barrister will usually wear robes and a wig and will face the Judge. |
| Defendant's solicitor (civil)/ Solicitor for accused (criminal) |
A lawyer employed by the defendant, or by the accused in a criminal matter, who prepares the papers for the barrister and who sits at the Bar table opposite the barrister in Court. |
| Witness | A person called to give evidence on behalf of one of the parties. |
