Summary

There have been 161 cases initiated in the Court of Appeal Civil Division for the period 01/07/2016 to 30/06/2017 which has decreased when compared to the previous year. There was also 177 cases finalised in the same period an increase of 37 cases when compared to previous year. The increase in finalised cases is reflected in the figures for the number of cases pending, which has decreased by 16 cases when compared to 2015/16. Meanwhile, the overall clearance rate for civil cases is sitting at 110% for 2016/2017.

Clearance rates

The clearance rate, expressed as a percentage, compares the number of cases that have been finalised with the number of cases that have been initiated. The clearance rate is an indicator of efficiency, which measures how well the Court uses its resources to manage its caseload. The internationally accepted target applied by courts is 100% (the number of cases cleared equals the number of cases filed), which aims to ensure there is no increase in the backlog of cases.
