Associate
Judges’ Associates work closely with the judiciary at the highest level in the State and are exposed to a range of work, both in and out of court. Being an associate provides a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience in the court environment, increase knowledge of court processes and procedures and observe the work of advocates and the judiciary, enabling a person to gain a thorough knowledge of court rules and become familiar with court documents and proceedings. Associate positions provide a unique opportunity to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the workings of the Court and as such are highly sought after and competitive.
The position of an associate is unique, requiring substantial interaction with the legal profession, professional associations and allied support staff (such as transcription services, police and the public). The position offers exceptional insights into the administration of justice in our State. You will be part of a dedicated team that will provide assistance in court to the Judge, manage chambers and undertake interesting and varied work which may include research work requiring high level analysis and application of legal knowledge.
Associates generally work at the Court for a period of between 12 and 24 months, although long term opportunities may also be available.
Previous Associates have found the position particularly helpful if planning to join the Bar, but is also in the transition to traineeships, graduate programs, practice as a lawyer or pursuing an academic career.
Tipstaff
Some Supreme Court Judges employ a Tipstaff who is not required to be legally qualified and provides extensive courtroom and administrative support to a Judge in his/her Chambers.
Research Associates
The Supreme Court employs Research Associates in both the Trial Division and the Court of Appeal. Research Associates work on discrete research tasks at the direction of the Judges of the Court. These positions are advertised on the Supreme Court website when vacancies occur.
