Open for Open House Melbourne
18 July 2017
The Supreme Court has just announced a second public talk in the old High Court building, on Sunday 30 July, during Open House Melbourne.
11:30am to 12:00pm: Landmark decisions and the Court
Justice Digby and Judicial Registrar Hetyey will lead a discussion on some of the landmark cases and important decisions that have been heard during the 90-year history of the building; as home to the High Court of Australia, the Federal Court of Australia and today as the Supreme Court of Victoria.
They will also talk about the cases that are heard in the building today, highlighting the jurisdiction and work of the Commercial Court of the Supreme Court of Victoria, through recent high profile decisions.
In the afternoon, visitors can hear about the architectural significance and heritage of the building:
2pm to 2.30pm: Art deco – architecture and history of the old High Court building
Join Robin Grow, renowned expert in Art Deco architecture from the Art Deco and Modernism Society, in discussion with Joanne Boyd, Supreme Court Archives and Records Manager, as they talk about the history and architectural style of the old High Court building.
Both talks will be hosted in Courtroom 1. Seating is limited and on a first come, first served basis. No tickets or bookings.
Completed in 1928, the old High Court building served as the first purpose-built home of the High Court of Australia. Designed by John Smith Murdoch, the Commonwealth’s Chief Architect at the time, the building represents an attempt to establish a more modern and dignified national style for Australian public buildings.
In addition to self-touring the old High Court building, visitors can chat to Court staff throughout the day.
Beautiful wooden story boards telling the tales of the history of the building have recently been installed. Come along and explore the beautiful art deco building in which they hang.
