Specialist Lists
There are a number of Specialist Lists. Most of these lists are managed by a Judge, but the Long Cases List is managed by the Listing Master. The Judge-in-Charge of each list gives directions to the parties from the early stages of each proceeding in their List.
Usually, the Judge will conduct the trial of proceedings in their List, where they have not been disposed of at an earlier stage. An exception is the Major Torts List, where the Judge-in-Charge only gives directions until the proceedings are ready for trial; these proceedings are then referred to the Listing Master for trial directions.
The majority of civil proceedings are not in Specialist Lists but within the Civil Management List (C.M.L.). Any civil proceeding that is not in a Specialist List, which has been commenced by writ and has had a defence filed, is entered into C.M.L for case management.
At each subsequent directions hearing scheduled, Master Kings, Master Efthim and Master Daly are responsible for determining any interlocutory directions required in each proceeding.
When a proceeding is ready for trial directions, it will be referred to the Listing Master for a Pre-Trial directions hearing, where pending her determination, a trial date may be fixed, a Judge allocated or further interlocutory directions be undertaken.
