Admiralty Lists

This List was established by resolution of the Council of Judges on 28 September 1995 to provide specialist management of cases concerning maritime and associated disputes. The List accepts cases which are brought in the court pursuant to the Admiralty Act 1988 (Cth) and cases which concern loss or damage to a ship or by a ship, or to goods carried by sea. A full list of the cases other than Commonwealth cases which may be managed in the Admiralty List is to be found in Chapter VII Rule 1.06 of the Rules of the Supreme Court.

Directions Dates and Times

Dates for the return of summonses for directions and for the hearing of applications may be obtained from the Associate to the Judge - Admiralty List.

Where Matters are Heard

As a general rule, matters are heard in the Old High Court Building, 450 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne, but you are advised to check the Daily List.

Obtaining Advice

Chapter VII of the Supreme Court Rules governs the practice of the Admiralty List. These Rules should be read in conjunction with Practice Note No. 5 of 2002.

Registry

If necessary, general procedural advice can be obtained from the General Registry.

Deadlines for Filing

An application for directions should be made within 14 days of the proceeding being entered into the List (see R.3.04 of Chapter VII of the Supreme Court Rules).

Reasonable notice is required to be given for any application.
