Funds in Court

The Senior Master's (Funds in Court) Office is a discrete administrative division of the Supreme Court. The Senior Master is a judicial member of the Court. He is responsible for the administration of the Office and the performance of its functions.

Section 113 (1) of the Supreme Court Act 1986 provides that "all money paid into Court under an Order of the Court or under any Act or the Rules is to be held by the Senior Master". Therefore, the Senior Master receives all moneys paid into Court.

Consequently, payments into Court ought to be made by cheque payable to "The Senior Master of the Supreme Court".

The Senior Master is responsible for the administration of funds paid into the Supreme Court and performs these duties in addition to his usual Court duties. Most funds paid into Court can only be paid out by an Order of the Court. It is usual that the Senior Master makes such Orders.

Funds paid into Court may be classified as either "Award" or "Non-Award" funds.
