Sentencing and judgment information in the matter of DPP v Ning Wang

Background

Mr Wang was charged with murdering his sister Qin Wang on 27 February 2019 in Clayton South. He also pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury in relation to an assault on his nephew, Kuan Yang.

The matter was the first Judge-alone criminal trial ever conducted in the Supreme Court following the introduction of the COVID-19 Omnibus (Emergency Measures) Act 2020, which made temporary changes to the Criminal Procedure Act 2009 allowing parties to apply for a Judge-alone trial.

Judgment

Mr Wang was charged with murdering his sister and was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter on Thursday, 22 October 2020.
