The Convention, which is an initiative of the Council of Chief Justices of Australia and New Zealand, will be livestreamed at The Australian Legal Convention November 2025.

The panel will begin at 12pm on Friday 21 November 2025, with Chief Justice Niall, Professor Edward Santow and Dr Kaye Ballantyne discussing the broad topic of AI in the law before a number of experts break down the topics of:

  • Harnessing AI by Courts
  • AI in Legal Practice and AI in Legal Education
  • AI and Ethics.

Chief Justice Niall said the Convention aimed to bring experts and institutions together to formulate practical solutions to current and emerging issues of national concern.

"AI presents both challenges and opportunities and I look forward to hearing from the significant depth and breadth of expertise within the panels," he said.

"It’s important that courts are a reflection of the communities they serve, and that means being open to new ideas and ways of working and continuing to improve and seek excellence in all areas."

As well as AI, the Convention themes will consider Legitimacy, Family and sexual violence, Institutional wellbeing, First Nations justice, Access to justice and Legal education and training.
