The Supreme Court trial in the matter of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions v Kumuthini and Kandasamy Kannan began on 8 February 2021.
On 23 March 2021, following a Supreme Court trial, the jury found Kumuthini Kannan and Kandasamy Kannan each guilty of:
- intentionally possessing a slave contrary to sub-section 270.3(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth); and
- intentionally exercising over a slave any of the powers attaching to the right of ownership contrary to sub-section 270.3(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).
A plea hearing (pre-sentencing hearing) was heard in front of Justice John Champion of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 29 June and 30 June.
Justice Champion sentenced Mrs Kannan and Mr Kannan on 21 July 2021 at 10.15am.
