Summary of Justice Tinney's sentencing remarks delivered on 26 November 2018.

Justice Andrew Tinney has sentenced Hung Anh Vu to 12 years’ imprisonment for the manslaughter of Hung Viet Nguyen and 6 years’ imprisonment for recklessly causing serious injury to Laura Chan.

Three years of the sentence for recklessly causing serious injury will be served concurrently with the sentence for manslaughter, meaning that Mr Vu’s effective sentence is 15 years’ imprisonment (with a non-parole period of 11 years).

“The sentence I pass on you must be such as to bring it home clearly to others in the community who may be minded to act with extreme violence in carrying out attacks upon partners and others, for reasons of anger, resentment and jealousy, that such behaviour will be met with strong punishment,” Justice Tinney said.
