Practice Notes provide information about particular aspects of the Court's practice, procedure and organisation. They sit alongside the Rules of Court to provide guidance in relation to the conduct of proceedings. Lawyers with the conduct of proceedings are expected to be familiar with their content and act in accordance with that guidance unless directed otherwise.

From 30 January 2017 the Court introduces a new system of publishing and organising its Practice Notes to make them easier to locate and navigate and ensure the information provided is up to date.

Each Practice Note is designated with the letter "SC" followed by an abbreviation denoting the Division of the Court to which it applies or the General designation followed by a number.

Where changes are made to a Practice Note, it will retain its designation. The body of the Practice Note will contain its new operative date and a history of amendments and a copy of the superseded version will be retained in the Practice Notes Archive.

Notices to the Profession provide information to practitioners about matters of a more temporal nature such as advising which judges are responsible for which specialist lists for the year; reminders to the profession about certain rules and practices if it appears there is confusion or non-compliance and notices from the Prothonotary or a Registrar about a matter of registry practice.

Notice to the Profession Pilot webcasting of proceedings From 1 June 2017 the Court of Appeal will commence a pilot of making audio-visual recordings of its criminal hearings publicly available through the Supreme Court of Victoria’s website. Some types of hearings will be excluded from the pilot.

This version (the second revision) replaces the previous version (the first revision) and applies to all sentencing hearings set down on or after 1 July 2018.

General SC GEN 7 Transcript in Civil proceedings (First revision) The purpose of this Practice Note is to set out the requirement for transcript in civil proceedings in the Trial Division and Court of Appeal.

This Practice Note (the First revision) commences on 1 July 2018 and, as revised, applies to all civil proceedings in the Trial Division and Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Victoria whether heard in Melbourne or on circuit. It replaces the previous version which commenced on 30 January 2017.

General SC GEN 5 Technology in Civil Litigation (First revision) The purpose of this Practice Note is to promote the effective use of technology in the conduct of civil litigation to reduce time and costs. This Practice Note sets out the Court’s expectations in relation to the use of technology, the facilities which the Court is able to provide, and protocols which may be employed. Specific guidance regarding the use of technology in a particular List or Division of the Court may be found in other Practice Notes.

This Practice Note was issued on 29 June 2018 and commences on 2 July 2018. It replaces the original version which commenced on 30 January 2017.

General SC GEN 19 RedCrest Electronic Case Management System The purpose of this Practice Note is to make provision for certain aspects of the conduct of proceedings initiated on RedCrest, the Court’s electronic filing system. This Practice Note is to be read in conjunction with Order 28A of the Supreme Court (General Civil Procedure) Rules 2015 and the eFiling User Guide.

This Practice Note was issued on 29 June 2018 and takes effect from 2 July 2018. It replaces SC CC 5 RedCrest (Second revision) which was issued on 21 December 2017.

Criminal Division SC CR 2 Bail applications and appeals (First revision) The purpose of this Practice Note is to centralise the administrative management of applications and appeals with respect to bail in the Registry and to specify the standard requirements necessary for the efficient processing of all such applications and appeals.

This Practice Note, as revised, applies to all applications under the Bail Act 1977 filed on or after 21 May 2018. This version (the First revision) replaces the original version published on 30 January 2017.

Commercial Court SC CC 8 Oppressive conduct of the affairs of a company (Second revision) This Practice Note was revised on 18 May 2018 and replaces the version issued on 30 January 2017, as revised on 19 July 2017.
